Mission
The General Emergency Service at Pêro da Covilhã Hospital is a multidisciplinary and multi-professional service whose mission is to provide urgent and emergent care to patients in need of such care, in all situations that fall under the definitions of Emergency and Medical Emergency, integrating the National Emergency Services Network with a level of Doctor-Surgery, operating 24 hours a day in the care of adults and offering also paediatric care daily between 00:00 and 08:00.
It articulates its activities with the obstetric emergency and paediatric emergency units. Its obligation is to help and advise in due time, all patients that come to the service, organising care according to the degree of urgency. With the Emergency Medical and Resuscitation Vehicle, it operates according to the directives of the National Medical Emergency Institute in pre-hospital stabilisation and medical monitoring during transportation of victims of accident or sudden illness in emergency situations. Its fundamental aim in all of its activities is to promote the efficient use of resources and a commitment to permanent technical updating. It is also committed to providing opportunities for the development of scientific research, as well as to collaborate in pre- and post-graduate studies.

It is in the process of collecting the list of numerous research projects developed in the Emergency Service, by professionals in theService itself and others, as part of its post-graduate training. There is also in an electronic repository of the Faculty of Health Sciences, a set of final dissertations of Integrated Masters in Medicine, carried out within the scope of the activity of the Emergency Service.
